Port Kells park dirt jump rebuild

Jordan, John and Derek from the SORCE bike club directed the 2013 rebuild of Port Kells Park dirt jumps.

The main goals of the rebuild were: A larger run in. Better advanced jumps. Addition of a pump track and turning gaps into step up table tops with super wide landings. The last time we supervised the rebuild we made some great progress 'click here for last rebuild'. The last rebuil was in 2011 and at the time we weren't able to build a pump track, or make the jumps into table tops due to time and budget constraints. This time around we succeeded in making the Lucky trails a true dirt jump  destination.

Port Kells dirt jumps/Lucky trails are located at 19260 88 avenue in Surrey at Port Kells Park (behind the outdoor pool)

SORCE bike club recently held a trail day on a section of the Junk Yard Dog loop in the South Surrey Bike Park. The new trail section will mimic the flowy, bermy Chainless Larry trail also in SSBP. Leading the construction of the new trail is Vince (Builder of Chainless Larry) and Jordan (SORCE president)

A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers who showed up! MORE>>

Port Kells park dirt jump update

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

The dirt jumps located at Port Kells park aka: 'Lucky Trails' will be receiving some machine-time and an update to the layout. The video above shows an idea of what is in store for the jumps. We intend to make the run-in larger and ride better, consolidate the medium and big set, and possibly(if there is time and budget) add a pump track to the spot. The great jumps at Lucky are about to get cooler!

PLEASE NOTE: Port Kells bike park area will be closed until May 3. Thanks for your patience and understanding during the maintenance!
We ask that everyone respect the 'no ride zone' in effect until May 3.

SORCE’s Sunday Twoonie Race was a Success!

On Sunday, April 14, 2013, Surrey Off Road Cycling Enthusiasts (SORCE) and the Shed Bike Club hosted the first of the 2013 Twoonie Race Series at the Delta Watershed. The local race attracted 34 racers from all over the Lower Mainland, paying just $2 to register for this affordable race. SORCE or Shed Bike Club membership was required. The skies were clear as mountain bikers raced in three different categories, novice, intermediate and expert. The muddy but fun course was suitable for all levels, attracting many first time racers to the event. “Everyone had a really great time,” said Jordan Proctor, SORCE President. “As a bike club we are focused on creating many more fun events for our members, from Twoonie Races, to bike festivals, to group rides.” The second race in the SORCE Twoonie Race Series will take place on Saturday, May 11 at the South Surrey Bike Park. Check in starts at 9 a.m., and the race kicks off at 10 a.m. Participants can register online through the club’s website at http://www.sorcebikeclub.org/. For insurance purposes, all participants are required to have a valid 2013 SORCE membership. Membership has its benefits, including discounts from select sponsors, a free pair of SORCE socks, and the ability to participate in group rides, the Twoonie Race Series and more! In partnership with the Shed Bike Club, SORCE members can also join the Shed’s weekly group ride every Tuesday evening. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Pinewood Elementary School parking area. Thanks to SORCE, the South Surrey Bike Park was developed over 10 years ago and has been maintained by the club since that time. SORCE was also integral in the development of Invergarry Bike Park in cooperation with the City of Surrey. In addition to ensuring there are lots of off-road places to ride in Surrey, SORCE also makes sure that children have an opportunity to be introduced to the sport. In 2012 the club worked with the City of Surrey to offer summer riding camps. This year we were able to offer Spring Break camps for kids and will have summer camps through the City of Surrey again. Moving forward, SORCE will continue to advocate for bike parks and off-road cycling in Surrey.

South surrey bike park

As you may have noticed while cycling at the South Surrey Bike Park, construction has started on the new Rec Center to be located between the tennis courts and the youth center.  The mountain bike trail that borders the construction site will remain open but may be rerouted or changed but will be restored to “Surrey trail specifications" by Surrey Parks.  For everyone’s information, all of the runoff water from the new building and accompanying parking lot will absorbed by the forest at the Bike Park.  The storm sewers at this part of Surrey have no more capacity, and so the water will be absorbed by the soil and the forest.  SORCE has a seat on the Urban Forest Advisory Committee that review and made suggestions for modifications for this water disposal system.  The contractor will build a Bio Swale (a natural ditch that slowly moves water and promotes absorption) all around the new building and parking lot.  That Bio Swale will meander  along the forests edge and then cross the BLT trail into an absorption pond – this is the swath of land that has been cleared near the construction site. The Urban Forest Advisory Committee insisted that an oil separator be included in the plans to remove the oil from the parking lot runoff, to protect the forest.  The original plan was built for a 50 year worst rain storm; but the Urban Forest Advisory Committee insisted on a 100 year worst storm plan – that is now being built.  Surrey Parks (and not the contractor) will be responsible to restore that part of the BLT trail back to Surrey Parks standards.  Enjoy the riding, and respect any construction activity that might be taking place on that part of the trail.
