After a 20 year hiatus, the World Masters Games returned to Canada, with 25,000 athletes from around the globe participating in a host of sports. The World Masters Games allows anyone over 30 years of age to participate without qualifying in a multitude of individual and/or team sports.

Rising to the challenge were Team SORCE XC racers, Jonathon and Frank who took advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to see how they could rank in their respective age categories against 400 fellow racers from Alberta and around the world.

Upon arriving in Edmonton at 9 am Thursday July 21, after a 13 hour marathon overnight drive with fellow participant Lance Turner, they headed straight over to the XC course in Trewillagar Park located in the Saskatchewan River Valley within the city boundaries, where they pre-rode the 9.2 km loop. What they found was a "big ring" ultra fast course alternating between single and double track and by West Coast standards an paved obstacle free path.

On Friday July 22, race day, it proved to be an even faster course as the previous days rains dried, leaving a hard packing clay base path. The 100 foot downhill section became almost asphalt in nature as black tire skid marks appeared as the clay base became hardened and polished over the course of the day.

Despite the prairie race style all three racers persevered, thoroughly enjoying the race event as they experienced a relentless 27 km big ring spin, without use or need of their "west coast" granny gearing. Each racer completed in the top 1/3 of their event with much satisfaction, given the competition and foreign race style they faced.

For those of you looking for an opportunity to challenge yourself, in whatever sport you fancy, then the World Masters Tour, makes its next stop in Sydney Australia, in 2009. Will Team SORCE make a showing – we hope….
