Hazard tree mitigation has been scheduled for this week at the South Surrey Bike Park. This work consists of the removal of 26 dead standing or dying trees located inside one of the root rot buffers. Development of a management plan for the entire bike park area infected with laminated root rot will continue as planned, however the 26 trees are obviously infected with the disease and present a risk of injury to the public. The trees were marked for removal in February by a certified tree risk assessor, and in order to ensure due diligence, the City must remove the marked trees. A nesting bird survey was completed by a RPBio, and no nesting birds were found in the area.
Work is scheduled for Wednesday May 12th, and it is anticipated to take 2 days for falling and additional day(s) for debris clean-up.

The trail, Smell The Helmut, has been renamed Gearless Larry. When the wooden structures were damaged by fallen trees this year, and the remaining structures were found to be too rotten to maintain, SORCE Dirt Jump Dude, Vince Samuel (Larry), organized and turned the trail into a “flowy” pump track style of trail. If you haven’t had a chance yet, check out this re-built trail – I think you will love it. The trail is not quite complete, so keep an eye open for “Work in Progress” on the trail for the next few weeks.

Deep in the coast mountains of BC, a small crew of filmmakers has spent the last eleven months huddled together, planning, scheming and brain-storming to come up with a concept for a new company and mountain bike film. The hard work has paid off and Anthill Films is stoked to announce the release of their premier film FOLLOW ME... Scheduled to be released in Spring 2010, FOLLOW ME... will feature some of the best mountain bikers in the world, including: Sam Hill, Gee Atherton, Brandon Semenuk, Cam McCaul, Thomas Vanderham, Matt Hunter, Ben Boyko, Kurt Sorge, Steve Smith and Geoff Gulevich.
The Anthill crew is no new-comer to the world of mountain bike films. Made up of five key members from the award-winning film company the Collective, Darcy Wittenburg, Darren McCullough, Colin Jones, Jonathan Shramm and Sterling Lorence, have been making films together for the past six years. The one new addition is Ian Dunn, who will be holding down the business side of things as Producer/Marketing Director, so the crew can focus on creating the best possible film.
For more details check out Anthill Films and Pinkbike.
SORCE is working on securing the Premiere of Follow Me.
Check back soon for more details.

You may have noticed the “Pest Management Area” ribbons throughout the Bike Park lately. These ribbons mark the areas of trees that are infected with Douglas Fir root rot. This infection is in many Surrey Parks, as it is in the Urban Forest on the south side of 24th Avenue, and Crescent Park. Trees infected with root rot can fall over very easily and pose a risk to park users. The City of Surrey is hoping to manage the problem with only selective tree removal.
WARNING: there may currently be risk of falling trees and/or branches in moderate wind (~40 km) within the Bike Park.

Vince has put a ton of work into redeveloping the Smell the Helmet trail working some flowy pumptrack elements into the slope. The city quickly cleared the fallen debris and Vince worked on removing hazards and transforming this classic Bike Park trail into something unique in the park. Check it out!

New Baffles on the Bike Park Exits |

Last week four baffles were installed by the City of Surrey on the major exits from the Bike Park along the Hearts in Motion trail.
After consultation with SORCE and the Sunnyside Acres Heritage Society, these were installed and funded by the City as part of the ongoing efforts of us all to preserve and maintain the park for the enjoyment of all users. This trail is used by many walkers and families and the baffles are designed to slow cyclists when exiting the Bike Park - let's face it, we have enough to keep us happy in the bike park without having to speed outside!
Please respect these barriers, keep them upright and undamaged, and keep your speed down when riding on the trails outside the park.

Bike Park to Join Urban Forest Park |

South Surrey Bike Park is about to Join The Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest Park
Surrey Council is about to approve including the South Surrey Bike Park inside the boundaries of The Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest Park. This will insure the long term protection of the Bike Park, as The Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest Park is protected against even future park development, like a new pool. This is excellent for our Bike Park. Included in this Surrey Council motion is the ability to use the Bike Park for “Active Use,” like racing and training.
There is a Public Meeting July 9 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Rotary Club House. Could as many members as possible please attend this meeting, so the possible “No” side is not the only voice. We need to let Surrey know we support this. Previous SORCE executive has worked on this initiative for years, and it is now coming to reality.
